The Rent Tax Credit was introduced in Budget 2023 for renters in Ireland.
If you have not availed of this relief previously, you can potentially claim the credit for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 tax years.
For 2022 and 2023, the credit is worth €500 for a single individual and €1,000 for a married couple, per tax year.
Meanwhile, the credit was increased by €250 in Budget 2024. This means, if you’re a single individual and you pay to rent your property, you’re now entitled to a tax credit worth €750, while married couples are due €1,500. The increased credit can be claimed for tax year 2024 onwards.
Furthermore, if you pay for a student child living in ‘digs’ accommodation, you can avail of the Rent Tax Credit for them.
