Australian tax return services for mining, oil & gas workers

If you’re working in Australia as an oil, gas or mining worker you are obliged to file an annual Australian tax return. By filing a tax return, you’ll also be able to apply for a tax refund.

What is a Zone Tax Offset?

The Zone Tax Offset is a tax concession that was introduced by the Australian Tax Office for people who live and work in remote areas of Australia.
To qualify you must have lived or worked in a remote area (not necessarily continuously) for 183 days in the same financial year or continuously within two financial years.
As many oil rigs, mines and gas fields are based in remote parts of Australia, you may be able to avail of this relief. We’ll check if you can claim the Zone Tax Offset and your refund will reflect this.

Mining, oil and gas workers tax FAQs

We file Australian tax returns for people who work in many different types of occupations, such as oil rig workers, mining workers, offshore workers, engineers, oil field workers, working holidaymakers and more.

Depending on your personal circumstances and the type of work you do, there are various offsets and expenses you may be able to claim.
You should keep receipts for any work-related expenses you incurred which weren’t reimbursed by the employer. This may include tools, stationery, safety clothing, occupation-specific clothing, travel expenses, donation expenses and medical receipts.
If you earn more than AU$18,200 in a year, you must file an Australian tax return. If you fail to do so, you may be fined by the ATO.
You’ll be charged AU$170 for every 28 days your tax return is late after the 31 October deadline.
