The Taxback team will ensure you declare the correct residency status once you arrive in Oz. You will either be a non-resident or a resident for tax purposes; it will depend on various factors. The main requirement to be deemed a resident for tax purposes is that you have continuously resided in Australia for a period of 183 days (6 months).
If you have enrolled in a course that lasts for less than 6 months, and you intend to leave right after you finish, you will be considered nonresident for tax purposes. If you are considered a nonresident you are still required to lodge a tax return. Yes, anybody who works in Australia needs to file a return at the end of the financial year regardless of income earned. This obligation applies especially to international students who earn income in Australia. Many international students can be daunted by the prospect of filing a tax return. The Australian financial year runs from 1 July until 30 June every year. The deadline to file your tax return and claim your tax back is 31 October. But don’t worry too much if you miss the deadline, you can get extra time to file your return if you file with a tax agent like Tax Quick Refund!

Once the Australian Tax Office has your application it should take about 2 working weeks to process.

This is the PAYG (pay as you go) form you get from your employer when you finish working for them. It details the amount you earned and the tax you paid. It used to be called a Group Certificate.
Make sure you send it to us when you get it from your employer at the end of June. If you don’t want to wait until then, ask your employer to give it to you when you finish working for them. They might say no but it’s worth asking!
If your employer refuses or you don’t want to wait until June to apply for your refund, we can apply as soon as you send us your final payslip. If you have that, then go ahead and apply now.
